  • There's for lack of a better term a "deck mechanic".
  • Story mode has a bunch of different game types and challenges.
  • It added supers before smash so that was different.
  • Opponents are killed by ring outs like Smash but there are walls that need to be destroyed.
  • (Effectively the same but no numbers and feels different)
  • Instead of a % health system your character loses color.
  • I don't consider Jump Super Stars for DS a smash clone despite being similar because it's different enough mechanically. To me changing enough of these for it to feel unique is fine.
  • Changing the camera perspective(not 2d).
  • Different inputs (no tilts + smash attacks).
  • Implementing different primary game modes (collect coins you knock out of people).
  • Changing the way to get kills (Sony All Stars, non % systems),.
  • To me it needs to be different mechanically.

The problem though is that while we probably had a good number of Platform Fighters, everyone can agree that Smash did it best (much like how there are many different kinds of "Hero Shooters" but if you're not Overwatch, you're going to get overlooked. When a game has percentages to knock enemies off screen- Smashīuild meter to obliterate your opponent- PS All StarsĪnd games use a Life Bar (which I can't think of one at the immediate moment, but they are there) I think the idea is that we have three different catagories of Platform Fighters (from what I can recall) Of course it tried to cash in on Smash's approach to having their mascots fight each other, but at least it wasn't under the same aspect of "build up percentage and send them flying" (although their approach again wasn't that well executed depending on who you ask). In fairness, PlayStaton All Stars Battle Royale would probably constitute the exception (all be it not a good one depending on who you ask).
